ECC Robotics has been building robots and competing in FIRST Lego League since 2009. This program is at El Camino Creek Elementary School. The award-winning ECC robotics team accepts any students between grades 4-6, but recently has been accepting students who graduated from ECC that are in 7th or 8th grade.
In the ECC Robotics program, students will work together and use their creativity to build an EV3 Lego robot to complete missions for the annual competition.
Besides building a robot, teams will have to do two other tasks for the competition: project and robot design.
In robot design, students will have to explain to judges what each part and attachment of the robot does, and who contributed what to the team. Because of this, if there is one lazy person on the team, they will bring the whole team down.
In project, students will have to solve a problem related to that year’s theme. Students will then present the problem and their solution to the judges in any way they want. Students will have to research and possibly meet with experts to find a viable solution to their problem. For example: Team EA Cubed has solved the problem of monarch butterflies dying during migration for the theme “Animal Allies.” Their solution is to give out milkweed plants with poinsettias during Christmas. They presented this problem and solution to the judges with a poster board, skit, and song parody.
If a team is exemplary, or showed more effort and quality than the other teams, they could advance to the Legoland competition, and from there to many other competitions.
FIRST Lego League is a worldwide competition, and if a team puts in the effort, time, and uses their time efficiently, they could go on to compete with the best in the world.
